What Is AI Model Governance?
AI model governance is the set of policies, assigned roles, and technical controls an organization uses to track what AI/ML systems it runs, confirm they were validated before and after deployment, and establish who is accountable when one fails. It is a management discipline, not a single tool or a certification you can buy.

The six components most programs share
- Inventory
- A documented list of every AI/ML system in production or development, including its purpose, owner, and risk tier.
- Roles and accountability
- A named owner for each system and a governance body (committee, risk function, or individual) with authority to approve, restrict, or retire it.
- Validation and testing
- Documented pre-deployment testing for accuracy, bias, and robustness, repeated on a defined cadence as the system or its inputs change.
- Monitoring
- Ongoing tracking of a deployed system's real-world performance against its validated baseline, with a defined trigger for re-review.
- Incident response
- A documented process for what happens when a model fails, produces a harmful output, or is found non-compliant with policy.
- Audit trail
- Records sufficient for an independent party to reconstruct what was decided, by whom, and on what basis.
How it differs from AI compliance
AI governance is the internal management system; AI compliance is measuring that system against an external requirement - a specific framework, regulation, or contractual obligation. A program can be well-governed without yet being compliant with a specific named standard, and a checklist claim of compliance without a real governance program behind it is exactly the gap an independent audit is built to find.
